Dopo 20 anni in TV, la famiglia più strampalata d’America si é guadagnata gli onori del cinema. Nel film Homer Simpson dovrà salvare la città da una catastrofe che lui stesso ha scatenato. Il resto lo sentiamo dalla voce dell’ormai leggendario creatore del cartoon, Matt Groening.
September 14th sees the Italian release ofThe Simpsons Movie, the much awaited film version of the hilarious TV show of the same name. That the movie is coming out this year is fitting, given that the Simpsons, a dysfunctional family of cartoon characters, made their debut on American television 20 years ago. They were originally a series of shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, but were given their own 30-minute program on prime time in 1989.
Simply the best
Since then over 400 episodes of The Simpsons have been made. It is America’s longest-running animated program and it is currently the country’s longest-running sit com. In December 1999 Time magazine called it “the 20th century’s best television series”.
The Simpsons were created by Matt Groening. He talked about the challenge of placing Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Meggie on the big screen.
Matt Groening: The Simpsons is a group effort. It’s a collaborative vision, a shared vision of a lot of people, hundreds of animators, 20 writers, a loto of producers, actors - actually, not that many actors; just a few actors doing a lot of voices - but, for the rest of us, for the rest of the production team, it’s a huge number of people and right now we have about 20 writers working on the show, and over the course of the last two decades, we took sort of “The Simpsons All Stars”, the best writers - well, not necessarily the best; the ones who are writing now are really good, too - but people who basically ran the show, amd working with Jim Brooks, who developed the show with Gracie Films and guided The Simpsons to its success and fruition, we sat in a room, just up the stairs here, and threw out a whole bunch of different ideas and one hit and that’s what we ran with.
You’ll love it
Groening is confident that the formula will work on the big screen:
Matt Groening: At the very beginning of the process, we thought, “OK, we’re on the big screen, so we’ve got to take advantage of that”, so we’re using the widest possible screen format and the animation is more sophisticated and ambitious and there’s a lot more going on, and the story is big, it’s an epic story, and we tried some different kinds of jokes and we’ve changed a lot of stuff around. I would say the movie is still a family movie, but, you know, if you’re bugged by the Simpsons on TV, you probably will be bugged by it in … the movie theaters, but if you’re not, you won’t be, you’ll love it. I think you’ll love it. The rating is PG 13, “for irreverent humor throughout”, which is … What?That’s the greatest review ever!

Not surprisingly, Groening was asked to explain the enduring success of The Simpsons.
Matt Groening: You know, I don’t know exactly why the show is so successfull all over the world. It’s not successfull everywhere, but in a lot of places, it’s really, really successfull, and I think in England, for instance, it seems to be more successfull even than in the US, Australia it’s also very, very successfull, Spain, France.
I mean it’s …it’s amazing. I’m thinking that maybeit’s because there’s a universal joy in seeing people that you can feel superior to! I think people love the idea that no matter how bad their lives are, at least they’re not as bad as the Simpsons’!

Il 14 Settembre segna l’uscita italiana de I Simpsons. Il Film, la versiona cinematografica più attesa dell’ omonima e divertente serie televisiva. Che il film sarebbe uscito quest’anno è appropriato dato che i Simpsons, un’anomala famiglia di cartoni animati, hanno debuttato nella televisione Americana 20 anni fa. Originariamente si trattava di una serie di cortometraggi all’interno del Tracey Ullman Show, ma hanno ottenuto la prima serata nel 1989.
Semplicemente i migliori
Da allora sono stati creati oltre 400 episod de I Simpsons. Si tratta del programma più lungo d’America e al momento è la sit com più lunga della nazione. Nel Dicembre del 1999 il Time la miglior serie televisiva.
I Simpsons sono stati creati da Matt Groening che ci ha parlato della sfida che ha dovuto affrontare per mettere Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa e Maggie sul grande schermo:
Matt Groening: I Simpsons è uno sforzo di gruppo. Grening è fiducioso che la formula andrà bene per il grande schermo:
matt Groening: All’inizio del processo abbiamo pensato, “OK, siamo sul grande schermo quindi dobbiamo trarne vantaggio”, perciò stiamo utilizzando il più ampio formato su schermo e l’animazione è più sofisticata e ambiziosa; c’è altro ancora, la storia è ampia, si tratta di una storia epica, e abbiamo provato diversi tipi di battute e modificato parecchie cose. Direi che si tratta ancora di un film per famiglie, ma, sapete, se ti disturbano I Simpsons in Tv, probabilmente sarà lo stesso al cinema; ma se non è così, li adorerete. Crdo proprio che li adorerete. Il film è stato giudicato adatto ai bambini fino a 13 anni (ma accompagnati da genitori) per “umorismo irriverente in tutto il film”. Questa è la miglior recensione possibile.

A Groening è stato chiesto di spiegare il successo duraturo dei Simpsons.
Matt Groening: Non so precisamente perchè lo show ha tanto successo in tutto il mondo. Non ha lo stesso successo ovunque, ma in molti posti ha veramente molto successo e credo che in Inghilterra, per esempio, ha più successo che negli Stati Uniti, in Australia, Spagna o Francia.
Voglio dire, è incredibile.
Credo che, forse, è perchè c’è una gioia universale nel vedere persone di cui ti puoi sentire superiore!
Penso che la gente ami l’idea che non importa quanto le loro vite sono disastrate, per lo meno non lo sono quanto quella dei Simpsons!

Giudizio personale sul film? Mi aspettavo di meglio. Troppo buonismo, troppo risalto dei valori americani. Speravo ci fosse più ironia e sinceramente non capisco il fatto che i bambini dovevano essere accompagnati da un genitore fino a 13 anni …. non c’era nulla di tanto vietato.
Sono molto più divertenti le puntate in tv.
